Short Description

The ESRA programme is supporting the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water, provincial governments as well as local communities in Northern Afghanistan to improve electricity supply and foster local economic development.
Rural electrification projects under ESRA are accompanied by targeted activities for the promotion of productive use of electricity including

  • Consideration of productive uses and productive use potentials in rural electrification planning and project selection
  • Awareness raising on productive use opportunities
  • Business trainings for (potential) entrepreneurs in newly electrified communities, based on the CEFE methodology
  • Technical advice on selection, installation and maintenance of electric equipment (e.g. motors)
  • Facilitate information on microfinance
  • Training of electricians

Productive uses that have developed in the newly electrified villages include carpentry, milling, oil pressing, photocopying, secretarial services and photography.
