PRODUSE Study

Productive uses of energy are seen as a key driver of economic development. However, systematic evidence of the relationship between access to electricity and poverty alleviation is scarce, and rigorous evaluations of energy access programmes are virtually non-existent.

In order to begin filling this gap, GIZ and ESMAP conducted the study Productive Use of Energy (PRODUSE) - Measuring Impacts of Electrification on Small and Micro Enterprises in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study examined the usage of electricity in micro-enterprises and assessed the effect of electricity usage on the performance of firms in Benin, Ghana, and Uganda.

One of the key objectives of the study was to develop and test a methodology for the robust but cost-effective evaluation of the productive use impacts of electrification programmes. We invite all organisations who are funding or implementing energy projects to use this methodology and publish the results on this website. These contributions will help produce a growing body of evidence-based findings on the energy-poverty nexus and productive use of energy.
